CHAPTER SIXTEEN
On Vanir, it was now Askar standing at the edge of the base and staring up at the stars. The warlord had informed him that he, Askar, would be heading out to join the fleet while the warlord remained on-planet to defend the queen. He should have been ecstatic. He would be in full command of the greatest vessel in their armada and now would have the glory he had been yearning for.
Yet, something was worrying him. Being so close to a queen in the throes of reproduction was clouding his mind like his soldiers, but he had to fight against the impulses echoing through the hive mind. The soldiers could partake in the fury and protectiveness that compelled them onward, but he had to remain steadfast. They needed his wits, not his wrath.
He turned to the Vindicator. There was still time before they could launch into the starlit abyss above. Then they needed to join the fleet. By that time, they would nearly be at their target. The planet of Vale awaited them. With it destroyed, the rest of the race would follow.
Askar wondered how long a full eradication would take. There were always some who survived. It could take some time with an entire galaxy to hide away in, and a force stretched thin. That was something to consider further in the future. He knew the humans were bringing most of their forces to the home world, one last attempt to beat them back. He imagined it would go about as well as their hopes for Odin.
Despite his command, he was still in awe of his ship. He could almost imagine the future battle, the Vindicator taking point and hammering the planet with its main cannon, stronger than two monoliths combined. He would be the one to announce the Komransâ arrival in grand fashion. However, he worried that this might cause the Valers to give up without too much of a fight.
That was one thing about the warlordâs tactics that he found curious. He wanted to show the Komransâ might through a show of their forces. He felt this was rather antique. Yes, the Komran armies were vast and all-consuming, but times had changed. The Valers had always prided themselves on the power of their technology. If the Komrans genuinely wanted to make a statement, they should show that they have far eclipsed their foes in technological prowess.
Granted, these were thoughts he kept to himself. These last days under the warlordâs command were not the time for disagreements, but now with him in control of the Vindicator, he would be the one to make the call.
âAskar.â The captain looked over to see said warlord approaching him. âYou seem lost. Even when I gave you command, your reaction was much more muted than I expected.â
The captain turned and saluted. âMy apologies, Warlord. Please do not mistake my muted response as fear or disinterest.â
He rubbed his head. âI am excited and honored to take full command of the Vindicator. However, I must keep myself in check.
